24-hour pH impedance testing
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a disease in which the contents of the stomach including gastric acid travel back into the esophagus. 24-hour pH impedance test which best diagnoses this condition and its severity.
In this test, the gastroenterologist can identify whether the reflux (stomach contents) is acidic or non-acidic.
What is done in the procedure?
a) A thin long catheter is inserted is inserted through the nose and is guided through into the opening of the stomach.
b) The catheter is kept for 24 hours where it records real-time pH values along its entire length and other activities
c) The information obtained from the catheter is relayed into a computer which is worn on a belt.
d) After 24 hours, the information is checked and a diagnosis is made
Things you should know
1. You need to stop consuming solids and/or liquids for 4-5 hours prior to the test
2. Once the catheter is inserted, consume food in the regular fashion
3. Procedure takes about 10-15 minutes and does not require anesthesia or sedation
4. In the majority of cases the test has no adverse effects; however, mild throat irritation may be reported.
