Anorectal Manometry
Anorectal manometry is a diagnostic procedure to evaluate the function of the anorectal musculature.
Ano-rectal musculature is responsible for expulsion of stool, which happens in a coordinated rhythmic pattern. Dysfunction of this pattern may lead to constipation or incontinence.
This test also checks the patency of the anal sphincter. The sphincter consists of an internal and external sphincter, or valve, which regulates the passage of stool. These valves are made of muscles that control the opening and closing of the anus.
This non-invasive test measures the pressures created by the musculature and the sphincteric patency (functioning of sphincter muscles) associated with defecation.
Common indications:
1. Difficulty/ (with or without pain) in passage of stool
2. Fecal incontinence (leakage of feces)
3. Constipation
