ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio-Pancreatography)

Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, or ERCP, is both diagnostic and therapeutic procedure for hepato-biliary tract and pancreas (liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, and pancreas).

It involves the use of an endoscope and X-ray machine. Use of a dye is employed (released through the endoscope)

Common indications:

Diagnostic

1. Obstructive jaundice

2. Gallstone obstruction

3. Pancreatic cancer

4. Pancreatic disease due to unknown cause

5. Biliary tract malignancy or infection

Therapeutic

1. Gallstone removal (Acute cholangitis)

2. Relieving biliary obstruction (stricture, blockages)

3. Stenting
