Esophageal Manometry
Esophageal manometry is a diagnostic test that checks whether the esophagus is working normally. It gives information about the movement of food through the esophagus into the stomach.
The esophagus is a long, muscular tube that connects your pharynx to your stomach.
After swallowing food, the esophagus contracts and pushes food into your stomach. The food bolus is pushed through as a result of serial, rhythmic contractions of the esophagus.
This test provides evidence regarding: –
1. Force of esophageal musculature
2. Rate and rhythm (pattern) of contraction
In this procedure a thin, flexible tube (catheter) containing pressure sensors is passed through your nose, down your esophagus and into your stomach.
Common indications:
a) Dysphagia with solids
b) Dysphagia with solids and liquids
c) Epigastric discomfort/ heartburn
d) Non-cardiac angina
